The United Kingdom (UK) is made up of four countries:
- England
- Scotland
- Wales
- Northern Ireland
The United Kingdom is officially called the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
It’s important to know the difference between the terms:
- Great Britain refers only to the island made up of England, Scotland, and Wales.
- The United Kingdom (UK) includes those three countries plus Northern Ireland.
Each country has a capital city, national flower, patron saint (with a saint’s day), and a national flag.
What are the capital cities of the UK countries? 🏰
Each UK country has its own capital city. This is one of the most common areas tested.
Capitals to remember:

What do the UK countries’ flags look like? 🚩
Each UK country has its own flag. The crosses of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland make up the Union Jack. The Welsh flag is not represented because when the flag was designed, Wales was already included in England.
